Cuban Immigration is on a Dramatic Rise! How Will You Verify Cuban Driver's Licenses?
Posted on: March 3rd, 2016
For decades, the U.S. has allowed Cuban citizens special treatment to migrate to the states. With preferential status likely to end as relations between the U.S. and Cuba are restored, many Cubans are heading to the U.S. in record numbers. In a recent interview with CNN, Marc Rosenblum, deputy director of the U.S. immigration policy program at the Migration Policy Institute, stated, "There is this concern that Cuba special privileges will be eliminated, so Cubans are trying to get out while the getting is good."
Cuban driver’s license added to our publications
To help our subscribers validate Cuban immigrants’ ID, we have initiated coverage of the currently-issued Cuban driver’s license in our online reference service, DOCUtector. We will also include it in the next print edition of the International I.D. Checking Guide.
Currently-issued Cuban Driver’s License Specifications:
- Dimensions: 3-3/4” by 2-1/2”
- Appearance: Pink and red, with silver holographic detail, driver’s photo on front, and vehicle categories printed on back of license.
- Material: Laminated security paper
- Security features: UV and infrared features appear on both the front and back sides of the license.
Looking ahead: Commercial flights authorized
In February 2016, U.S. and Cuban representatives signed an agreement to double the number of daily flights into Havana to 35, and add up to 90 daily flights to other Cuban cities by fall of 2016. This may result in another surge of Cubans entering the U.S.
Downstream, possible termination of the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966 would end the special treatment it has afforded Cuban immigrants for decades.
